A hybrid hosting arrangement will be used for the tournament, with four matches taking place in Pakistan and the remaining nine matches taking place in Sri Lanka.
The finest teams from India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, and Nepal will participate in a total of 13 thrilling one-day international matches during the Asia Cup 2023, which the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) announced on Thursday. The participation of Nepal, who are making their first-ever appearance in an Asian event, is particularly noteworthy.
With four matches taking place in Pakistan and the remaining nine being played in Sri Lanka, the tournament will be staged using a hybrid style.
The Gadaffi Stadium in Lahore will likely host the following matches under the hybrid model: Pakistan vs. Nepal, Bangladesh vs. Afghanistan, Afghanistan vs. Sri Lanka, and Sri Lanka vs. Bangladesh.
Two teams from each of the two groups will advance to the Super Four stage in the 2023 edition. The Super Four stage final will thereafter feature a match between the top two teams.
This competition is crucial for the Asian nations since it will provide important practice for the ICC World Cup, which will be held in India.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has previously said no to going to Pakistan for the Asia Cup due to security reasons. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) put out two proposals in a hybrid format to guarantee that the event’s hosting rights will be protected. The first proposal called for India to play its games at a neutral site while Pakistan would host every other game. The second alternative was that Pakistan would host the first phase’s four group stage matches, with a neutral site hosting the final as well as the future phase’s matches involving the Indian squad.
In the end, the hybrid model, the second alternative, was chosen. The organizers will soon release the full event calendar, which will include more information about the matches and locations.
