Pakistan’s SBP is its central bank. The State Bank of Pakistan Order, which established it, did not fundamentally alter its constitution until the bank was nationalized on January 1, 1974, greatly expanding its purview of operations.
Today’s operations are under the auspices of the State Bank of Pakistan Act, 1956, as amended. Its main office is in Karachi, Pakistan’s financial hub. The central bank’s operating arm, SBP Banking Services Corporation (SBP-BSC), which is a completely owned subsidiary of the bank and operates branches in 16 cities across Pakistan, including the capital Islamabad and four provincial capitals, is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the bank.
